Go Before It’s Gone: Destinations in Peril

Why go Exotic?

Why spend so much money to try and keep up with the 'Elitist's in society? The State of New Mexico USA, has the most beautiful scenery and hiking trails anywhere in the world. The 10k North Trail just below the crest of the Sandia Mountains, allows you to view a panorama of the ancient seafloor from the mid-cretaceous. See 'Cretaceous' over on wordpress. http://cretaceous.wordpress.com/

The 10,000 foot altitude is memorable for the clear air that is so rare in other parts of our country. If hiking is too strenous for you, then sight seeing in the areas around Santa Fe, The Jemez Mountains 'Valle Grande Caldera' ancient Volcanism, along with the recent lava flows of 'The Valley of Fires' southeast of Socorro, only about 2,500 years old. I can go on and on with camping areas that have great trails and scenery right here in our own Great Southwest. Enjoy this Earth, you only get one chance.

Tempting Place to Visit for Tourists

Those descriptions of camping sites and hiking trails in the Sandia Mountains and elsewhere are worthy of a travel brochure and they certainly are appealing to tourists and other adventurers, local and foregn alike, who may want to visit there in the near future after reading the post. Yes, if only there was a fast and nonpolluting way to get to these places. I wonder what planes will use once all the fossil fuel reserves of the Earth are depleted?

Fossil fuels

Thank you Alvin at the science desk. I went to your site and found an array of very interesting vids. I suggest anyone check it out. The fossil fuels will not dissapear leaving us no alternative. History has shown that humans are very resourceful. The fossil fuels will slowly diminish and become less and less affordable to the underclass, causing a decline in their use. That is the end goal correct? Another scource will begin to be exploited by the greater society, as has been the case for the history of mankind. The educated wealthy live well, no matter where or at what point in history.

The driving force will be the future education of Science and Engineering students, hopefully reversing the past trend in this USA to graduate what I condecendingly refer to as 'Humanities specialists', that have absolutely no idea how 'Things Work'.

The video "Shift happens" available under 'links' at; http://daflikkers.blogspot.com/

"Shift Happens".... is self explanatory The music is great, even if you don't want to beleive the facts. Our own family is comprised of all segments of society due to marriages. Our families segment most Scientifically attuned to the future needs of the Earth, is of Asian decent. As is said, "Shift Happens" check it out.

Common sense in peril

I copy my comment as posted at the original:

Twenty years ago the idea of "helping" via eco-tourism may have seemed to make sense, but the reality of climate change is that the travel alone seals the fate of these places (unless you're biking there and back). If it's worth seeing it's worth preserving, skip the trip and donate all of the money you would have spent to preserve these places.

Volunteer vacations instead

I'm not a huge fan of "eco-tourism" either. In fact, I'm not ever like a tourist anywhere I am. I usually try to do what the rest of the population does...and you'll hardly ever find me near a beach.

I also belong to a Church that does volunteer and rebuilding projects in Mexico, Nepal and Rwanda. My girlfriend and I plan to go to Mexico in March to help out.

Antarctica and Arctic for me.

Eco-tourism for the rich.

A fascinating article on all those places we'd all love to visit before we die... or rather before they "die" . And surely we'd all like to visit them, if it didn't cost so much. Eco-tourism seems to be focusing more and more on the high end traveler and ignoring the majority, it costs more to get in a canoe than it does in a power boat in some locations today. Until Eco-tourism becomes affordable to the majority it may turn out to be a doomed effort.

Great article! I want to go

Great article! I want to go to Madagascar, that has been a lifelong dream.
I also want to see the Indonesian coral in Sulawesi before it's gone.

Yes I was thinking of going there this October, until it turned out that the eco-friendly trip was going to cost more than a new car. What's the point of something being eco friendly when most people can not afford it. It defeats the purpose. The MAJORITY need to be eco-friendly if things are to change, not the minority.

I highly think that any country can raise it's profits by offering great services(tourism). Right ? Just look at any german example for instance... how do they do it ? Of course they can't come up with Grand Canyon Tours but they sure make a lot of money.
