A new trend is beginning ... the concept of a living green roof. While its mostly used in commercial properties at the moment, it does show promise, and hopefully will migrate to residential properties as well. Very interesting!

not so new
actually, this has been around for a long time and is already in the residential space as well, esp. in europe. in germany, it's pretty common in some areas for farmhouses to have green roofs. there are green roof homes in Vancouver, London, and probably a few other spots. i'm thinking there must be at least one in the U.S. by now. they are still fairly expensive, but hopefully the cost will come down as people figure out new tricks!
