Bring Soaring Fuel Costs Back Down to Earth: Global Gas Boycott on the 5th Day of Every Month

Its stupid and doesn't work, but if it makes you feel better...

Its a dumb idea. It doesn't change your fuel usage, it just changes your buying pattern. And it doesn't change the economics of oil and won't impact prices. Dumb ideas like this have been around since the Internet was invented and before that they were on BBSes and before that you saw them in newspapers. Since I saw the first one of these, gas has gone from $0.35/g to $4.00/g, so I don't think it has worked. But if you want to make room so I don't have to wait in the gas line, I'm more than happy to take advantage.

You want to bring down fuel prices? Quit using fuel. It won't bring down prices, but it will help the environment and perhaps your pocketbook. assuming you can still make a living.

Take heart, Gnomic, this is just the beginning!

I understand your doubts and gentle pessimism, my fellow global citizen. Our goals are so much more than simply bringing fuel prices down. If it were a simply matter of gasoline, I might agree with you about simply quitting using fuel. If our world had an immediate alternative to turn to, quitting would be entirely appropriate. However, we don't have those alternatives. The price of fuel effects every part of our lives; gas is not a necessity, but food is. If gasoline was unavailable tomorrow, very few of us would be able to be self-sufficient. I would encourage you to expand your frame of reference and consider Fuel-Free Fifth Day one more straw that we can place upon a very greedy, corrupt camel. This campaign can work if we work towards its success, but if you truncate your potential before you generate change, you are doomed to static mediocrity.
With respect,
Kazarian

Nope, You're Wrong

Unless you plan on not driving during each Fuel-Free-Fifth you're not going to make a difference. You're not actually reducing demand, the driver - pun intended - behind the price hikes, because you'll still be using gas. You're just simply delaying the date upon which you'll be purchasing the same amount of gas.

Now, if you could get everyone to not drive on the fifth of each month, then you might get somewhere.

No driving! You got it!

I'm not sure if you got to read the whole press release or visit our website, but one of the goals of Fuel-Free Fifth Days is to encourage everyone to NOT use gasoline at all on the fifth day of every month. That includes buying it, and consuming it. We're encouraging others to walk, bike, and diversify their day without using fossil fuels. Look a little closer at http://fuel-free-fifth.gccalliance.org/ and join us and many others in NOT driving on the fifth of each month.
