If industrialized countries safeguard tropical rainforests from deforestation, they may be able to offset around 50 million tons of CO2 at an approximate rate of $2/ton, reveals Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in one of its July 23 publications. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) is an effective strategy that has the potential to safeguard the environment and decelerate climate change.
