Today I saw this article reporting on a study clearly linking declining fish stocks to algal blooms (so-called 'toxic tides'). For me this situation drives home three things about sustainability.

In less than 20 years, the Grand Banks - a marine region off the coast of Canada - went from one of the richest fishing grounds in the world to a marine wasteland as overfishing destroyed the natural abundance (more).

FishZilla or the snakehead is a native Chinese fish which has shark like teeth, a taste for blood and can walk on land. Reports and media coverage have sparked this documentary which is soon to air.It has had a detrimental impact on local fish stocks and it has been known to even attack humans!

Well, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) is at it again…showing utter disregard for California’s wildlife. This time around, they’ve pumped dry flooded Prospect Island, in the Sacramento River Delta, with no regard for rescuing the fish that lived in there.

Right now, there are thousands upon thousands of dead and dying fish laying in the shallow puddle that used to be the island. These pumps are now idle, but the damage has been done.
