The majority of yoga mats are manufactured in Taiwan and made of poly-vinyl chloride, or PVC. PVC makes a great mat due to its grip, durability and price point. But, unfortunately, there is no safe way to create, use or destroy these mats.

Brazil's largest logistics operator and owner of three of its railroads, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), has decided to start using ties made of recycled plastic and rubber rather than the traditional wood. CVRD accounts for around half of Brazil's freight train traffic. The ties are finishing testing now; CVRD will start laying about one million of the special ties next year.
