This series details the many ways we can lessen our eco impact via our everyday routines. In this post, the eco impact of DVDs and CDs are examined, along with tips to lessen your footprint on the earth by mildly changing the way you watch movies—from Netflix to Blockbuster to bootlegs on Canal Street. (Plus, the image is hilarious, if you can read the Harry Potter fine print.)

Childfree - the ultimate in eco-choice
It is important that the individuals living in countries with large environmental footprints opt not to have children. One human being, depending on where they live, can produce between 21 (Luxemburg) to 0.7 (Georgia) tons of CO2 per year according to Time For Change, with the global average at about 4 tons of CO2 per person per year.
Duh! New Study Finds Old Growth Forests Store Carbon Dioxide

Reviewing research on over 500 forests, scientists in Europe and the United States have concluded old growth forests store more carbon dioxide than they release. They are not carbon neutral, as previously believed.

New York Suing the EPA Over Refinery Pollution
Twelve states have announced yet another suit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They claim federal regulators have failed in issuing the necessary standards to regulate green house gas emissions. The EPA’s rebuttal: it’s not in our job description.
Is Storing Carbon Dioxide Under the Ocean a Viable Strategy for Combating Global Warming?
In a paper that is available online and will be published in an upcoming issue of The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Goldberg and his colleagues write about how a basalt formation off of the coast of Oregon and Washington could potentially store anywhere from 120-150 years of carbon produced by the United States in its cavities (assuming current U.S. emission rates do not increase).
Atmospheric Water Generator
17 million barrels of oil was used last year to make the plastic bottles used for American water consumption producing 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. 86% become garbage or litter.
The Cost of Plastic Bags

A person eliminating the average 330 plastic bags each person uses per year would save 1.31 gallons of oil and 30.5 Lbs of CO2 each year. Those 330 plasic bags add up to 5 lbs of garbage.
How 3 ABBA CD’s Can Buy You Control Over Europe’s Big Polluters
You can personally prevent a measurable amount of pollution from some of Europe’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters. For the price of 3 ABBA CD's.
Whitehall Computers to Go Green
Worldwide, computers are responsible for the same quantity of carbon emissions as the airline industry. It is a serious problem that requires a serious solution. We won't achieve this just by offsetting but by making serious changes to the way we do business.
EPA Drafts Rule for Geologic Carbon Sequestration
On Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency released a first draft of a rule that will govern the geologic sequestration of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from power plants. Geologic sequestration of global warming gases, also known as “carbon capture and sequestration” (CCS), is viewed by many as a critical component of a climate change policy portfolio.
G8 Countries Reluctant to Set Short Term Emission Tragets
The G8 countries have endorsed bringing down the global greenhouse gas emissions by fifty per cent by the year 2050, however they did not specify a base year for emission cuts.
Asian Development Bank Sets Up Post-2012 Carbon Fund
The Asian Development Bank announced on Tuesday that it has established a new carbon fund to provide financial support to clean technology initiatives in the Asia Pacific region that will continue to generate carbon credits post 2012. The fund- called the Future Carbon Fund will initially be worth...

Carbon Markets Clear the Air
As the public debate continues on whether greenhouse gases contribute to global warming or whether we are going through a natural cycle, enormous political pressure and investment dollars are streaming into the solutions aspect of the debate. Discussions in North America on environmental policy and economic benefits are steaming ahead at all levels of government and in the corporate board room.Putting the debate aside, creating a carbon market that stimulates activity to address climate change provides everyone an opportunity to participate.

The International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance Launched
Eight leading carbon reduction and offset providers have joined hands to form the The International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), with the overall objective of strengthening, promoting and lending credibility to the burgeoning market for carbon offsets. The ICROA members have signed up to a new code of best practice towards the fulfillment of...
Want to Curb Global Warming? Start Recycling and Composting
Looking for ways beyond changing lightbulbs and taking the train to help reduce your carbon footprint? Turns out we all could make a big difference in greenhouse gas emissions by not throwing out so much trash and composting our food waste.
GHG Education Stretches Beyond Traditional Universities
As the need for climate change solutions continues to grow, so does the need for properly educated greenhouse gas management and measurement professionals. Universities and colleges are typically the first place one thinks of when they hear “advanced education”; unfortunately, these institutions alone do not currently provide education for the full spectrum of the climate change industry.

Get Rich Harvesting Fuel from CO2 Emissions
Thanks to Al Gore, we all know by now about the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the resulting impact on global climate. Now, 2 researchers from UCSD have developed a prototype device that can capture energy from the sun, convert it to electrical energy and “split” carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen.
We Have 18 Months to Save Civilization by Preventing Catastrophic Climate Change, McKibben Says
Vermont author, scholar and activist Bill McKibben sees the climate change challenge like this: we have 18 months — just 18 months — to pound a single number into the world’s collective head.
350.
Today’s number: 387
Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels now stand at 387 parts per million.

NorthWestern US Outpaces National Decline In Gas Consumption : Gas 2.0
Residents of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho are outpacing the national average decline in gas consumption, according to a new report by the Sightline Instutute. In the last 8 years, residents of these states have cut back by about a gallon per week, for a total gas consumption reduction of 11%. In the Pacific Northwest, gas usage has fallen to its lowest level since 1966, while CO2 emissions from gasoline have fallen by six-tenths of a ton per capita since 1999.

Algae 101
Algae has been making the news a lot lately, and is a fairly new topic in environmental circles.
Let's take a step back for a moment and talk about why algae is interesting and important.
Zero Carbon House Project
This house is being built Michael Rea in affiliation with Duncan Price on Britain’s most northerly island of Unst, which will bring obvious benefits to the environment. The carbon neutral home lowers the carbon footprint by producing its own energy and storing it to heat the home.

Better Buildings Best Way to Cut Carbon
A North American organization of energy experts issued a report that found that building more green buildings is the best way to cut carbon dioxide. In fact, green buildings could cut emissions more deeply, quickly and more cheaply than any other global warming mitigation effort.

British Columbia Gets a Carbon Tax
The B.C. government introduced North America's first full-fledged carbon tax yesterday, an attempt to engineer a social movement aimed at getting British Columbians to cut their greenhouse-gas emissions.
Sequestering C02 from coal may not be as easy as people hope.
According to the New York Times, sequestering C02 from coal may not be as easy as people hope. Burying just 10 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted over a year from coal-fire plants at current rates would require moving volumes of compressed carbon dioxide greater than the total annual flow of oil worldwide
Save the environment. Go on a Cow Killing Spree - only joking
Joking apart there is a strong environmental argument for cow genocide. Cows and other livestock are probably the most significant threat to our environment today.
Â
We need to cut our dependence on cattle drastically if our civilization is to survive in any semblance of its present form.
